Ohelo berry

Also called `ohelo · `ohelo `ai · Ohelo 'aiVaccinium reticulatum · Ericaceae family

ʻŌhelo connects a Hawaiian volcanic landscape with jams, pies and a small but thoughtful breeding effort. Cultivated selections were developed partly to offer an alternative to collecting every berry from wild plants.

Get to know it

ʻŌhelo is a small Hawaiian berry with a cranberry-like taste that ranges from tart to sweet. It grows among lava and volcanic ash, then finds its way into jam and cream-cheese pie. Even a ripe berry can be yellow-orange: Red Button wears red speckles over a pale background.

More about the taste

ʻōhelo berries (Vaccinium reticulatum) range from sweet to tart, and are often introduced to newcomers by comparison with cranberry — though the two fruits don't taste identical.

The Kīlauea variety has orange-to-salmon young berries; Red Button has light orange-yellow berries with red speckles — despite its name, Red Button berries aren't uniformly red.

Kīlauea and Red Button differ measurably in sugar content and acidity.
